The room became the work: Ten years of Impact Hub Kigali

Over ten years, Impact Hub Kigali has grown from a coworking and community space into a support system for entrepreneurs across Rwanda and the region. The people who came through its doors and the challenges they needed to solve shaped its evolution.

In Impact Hub Kigali’s early years, much of the work began the same way: people gathered in a room. Entrepreneurs, creatives, technologists, artists, and people working on environmental issues came together for meetups, workshops, community conversations, and sector gatherings.

The room did a lot of the work.

Some gatherings were about connection. Some were about learning. Some were about culture, sustainability, or entrepreneurship. And some were built around a specific challenge that someone in the community was trying to solve. One of those gatherings was the Social Enterprise Happy Hour. Once a month, a local enterprise came to Impact Hub Kigali and presented a problem to the community. Members spent the evening thinking it through, asking questions, and offering their skills. The company left with fresh thinking. The members left having worked on a live business challenge. Those early gatherings carried a belief that stayed with Impact Hub Kigali: entrepreneurs make faster progress when people with different skills work alongside them on their problems.

Impact Hub Kigali launched in 2015 as a coworking and community space for entrepreneurs and creatives in Rwanda. At the time, the ecosystem was still taking shape, with fewer places where founders, creatives, and experts from different sectors could meet across disciplines. It became a home for that kind of exchange. Membership gave people a desk. Events gave them a reason to meet. Conversations gave them a reason to return.

As the years went on, the entrepreneurs who came into the space needed more than connection. They needed tools to understand problems more deeply, ways to test ideas, and guidance on turning a concept into something people could use, buy, or support. In 2017, Impact Hub Kigali began using design thinking with entrepreneurs. It gave teams a way to understand a challenge before trying to solve it. Through workshops, hackathons, and ideathons, they worked from defined problems, spoke to users, and developed early concepts.

After the final pitch, the ideas needed somewhere to go. Some teams were ready to see whether an idea could become a product, service, or venture. That led Impact Hub Kigali to launch incubation, helping entrepreneurs move from early concepts toward market entry, customer validation, and clearer business models. Incubation helped Impact Hub Kigali work with entrepreneurs moving toward market entry. It also brought the team closer to ventures that were already operating. They had customers, teams, products, and early traction. Their challenge was growth. They needed stronger systems, better financial models, expert guidance, access to partners, and in some cases funding.

That need led to acceleration and became central to Impact Hub Kigali’s work. The team started by identifying where each business was stuck, then addressed it with tailored technical support, funding, and connections across the ecosystem. The aim was to help ventures build stronger models, operate in real markets, and grow with more discipline.

Around 2022, Impact Hub Kigali began hosting fewer events and choosing them with more intention. Events had become common across the ecosystem, and its work was moving deeper into venture support. The team focused on gatherings connected to the sectors where it was already active, including food systems and the circular economy. The goal was to build communities of practice around those sectors: people who could meet repeatedly, share experience, open doors, challenge assumptions, and stay connected as ventures grew. These communities of practice became part of the support system around ventures. Entrepreneurs could meet experts, mentors, investors, partners, and peers. The room continued after the meeting ended.

Today, Impact Hub Kigali’s programmes work with ventures through tailored technical assistance, expert support, coaching, and funding. Over the past decade, it has implemented more than 40 programmes and supported more than 500 ventures across Rwanda and the region. Its work now falls into three connected areas: acceleration programmes that work directly with entrepreneurs, facilitation that brings design thinking and collaborative problem-solving to partners and institutions, and ecosystem building through coworking, events, and communities of practice.

Impact Hub Kigali still brings people together around the questions entrepreneurs and ecosystems are trying to solve. The room takes different forms now: a cohort session, an expert advisory meeting, a design workshop with a partner, a founder check-in, a community of practice, or a conversation with an investor.

Ten years later, the founding belief still holds. Entrepreneurs make faster progress when they are surrounded by people who can question with care, offer what they know, and work through problems with them. The room became the work because the people in it showed Impact Hub Kigali what the work needed to become.
