Playing the green game: nurturing sustainability in the startup ecosystem

Sustainability is no longer optional for startups; it is essential for long-term success. Impact Hub advocates for embedding sustainability into startup ecosystems by promoting circular economy principles, fostering collaborations, and ensuring access to green financing. The EU-funded Green at Heart initiative supports social economy SMEs in integrating sustainable practices.

One would think that, in today’s rapidly evolving business landscape, sustainability is no longer an option, but an imperative. Startups and SMEs, particularly those operating within the social and proximity economy, are facing increasing pressure to integrate green practices into their business models. Yet, so many startups are still anchored to a 20th century business logic of shareholder value, while those who decide to move towards a more social and environmental proposition often struggle to balance their impact with their financial viability.

The struggle is real, so how do we address it? We at Impact Hub firmly believe that entrepreneurship can be a means to achieve social and sustainability outcomes. We don’t just believe it: we do it every day in 120 locations worldwide (and counting!). The answer lies in building a thriving, future-proof startup ecosystem committed to environmentally and socially responsible business practices. By embedding sustainability into the DNA of startups, we can create businesses that are not only profitable, but also have a lasting positive impact on society and the planet. These pioneers show that social impact can be achieved by applying new business models. This also helps pivoting companies to find their way.

From day one

At Impact Hub, we recognise that sustainability must go beyond individual actions—it needs to be embedded into the way businesses operate from day one. This is why we prioritise the circular economy as a core strategic priority of our network. Unlike the traditional linear model of “take, make, dispose,” the circular economy is about designing out waste, keeping materials in use, and regenerating natural systems.

For startups and entrepreneurs, this approach offers not only environmental benefits but also competitive advantages—reducing resource dependencies, unlocking new business opportunities, and fostering innovation. By integrating circularity into the entrepreneurial ecosystems, we implement hundreds programs around the globe helping businesses build models that are resilient, profitable, and sustainable in the long term.

First, make the case for sustainability

Sustainability is not just about reducing negative environmental impact; it’s about creating long-term positive value. It helps make companies future proof. Companies that embed sustainable practices early on into their journey benefit from:

  • Increased Competitiveness: Procurement (B2B) faces more stringent requirements,  and consumers are increasingly favouring businesses with strong sustainability credentials.
  • Cost Efficiency: Implementing circular economy principles by adopting strategies that use resources more efficiently and reduce/repurpose waste will ultimately have a positive impact on a business’s finances.
  • Resilience to Market Turmoil: With evolving regulations in response to mounting environmental challenges, sustainability-driven businesses are ahead in the game, thus better equipped to adapt and thrive.
  • Access to Green Financing: Investors (and not just impact investors) are increasingly looking for impact-driven startups that align with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria.

Second, build a sustainable startup ecosystem

The case may be clear, but startups cannot drive the transition to a new economy on their own. To truly nurture sustainability in the business world, we must create enabling entrepreneurial ecosystems.  providing the right tools, knowledge, and networks. That’s why, for example, we published last year our Circularity Toolkit, targeting the heart of every ecosystem: the business support organisations that are in touch every day with entrepreneurs. This has evolved to a lively Community of Practice of Impact Hub teams from around the world, offering circular economy programs and connections, currently involving over 50 people at 30 Impact Hubs.

But while the toolkit and Community of Practice represent important milestones, enabling any incubator and accelerator program to turn their startups into circular enterprises, other elements are needed to fill in the picture:

  1. Education and Capacity Building
    • Equipping entrepreneurs with the skills and knowledge needed to embed sustainability into their business models through targeted training, workshops, and mentoring programs.
    • Providing practical frameworks such as circular economy principles, impact measurement methodologies, and sustainable supply chain management.
  2. Collaboration and Partnerships
    • Fostering collaboration between startups, investors, policymakers, and industry experts to co-create innovative solutions that address sustainability challenges.
    • Building communities where knowledge and best practices can be shared, strengthening the collective impact of sustainable businesses.
  3. Access to Resources and Financing
    • Ensuring startups have access to green funding opportunities, impact investment, and support programs that help scale sustainable initiatives.
    • Connecting entrepreneurs with grants, subsidies, and sustainability-driven investment funds.
  4. Measuring and Showcasing Impact
    • Encouraging startups to measure and communicate their social and environmental impact, demonstrating accountability and transparency to stakeholders.
    • Celebrating success stories to inspire other entrepreneurs to adopt sustainable practices.

These are precisely the pillars on which our EU-funded Green at Heart  is built. Recognising the urgent need for sustainability-driven innovation, Green at Heart supports social economy actors in integrating circular and green practices into their core operations. It does so, via an integrated holistic approach that goes from building knowledge, reinforce attitude and support shift in practices via the subgranting mechanism. This approach perfectly integrates in the wider actions that our network delivers in the field of circularity and green transition, looking with all our partners to a more resilient and future-proof economy—where business success and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.

Third, understand the role of finance-providers and policy-makers

On the one hand, finance-providers, such as investors, grant-makers and banks, play a crucial role in shaping a sustainable startup ecosystem. By prioritising businesses that align with sustainability goals, creating – when absent – green financing facilities and ensuring entrepreneurs can access them easily, they can become the fuel that is needed to reach our global sustainability targets. Impact-driven investment is not just about doing good, it’s about ensuring long-term returns while making a meaningful contribution to people and planet. This is complemented by disinvestments in unsustainable endeavours.

On the other hand, it is critical to bring policy-makers along the journey as well. Whether they are removing hurdles to help green businesses start up or creating ad-hoc legislation that gives them fiscal incentives, their role is essential. This will be further discussed in the Policy White Paper that we will develop in the Green at Heart project in 2025, with our consortium partners, the local governments in Vienna, Madrid and Amsterdam alongside the corresponding Impact Hubs located in these cities.

Looking ahead

Sustainability continues to reshape the business landscape, and startups have a unique opportunity to lead the way in innovation and responsible growth. We know that starting (and running!) a business is challenging, and entrepreneurs need support to find, consider and implement sustainable solutions, which is why we’re proud to be able to support their journey towards becoming ‘green at heart’, by offering advice and funding in collaboration with the European Commission. Green at Heart aims to empower social economy SMEs to integrate sustainable practices into their operations. Through tailored tools, capacity-building programs, and strategic partnerships, Green at Heart helps social businesses and startups transition towards a greener and circular model.

By fostering a culture of sustainability within the startup ecosystem, we can create a future where businesses thrive while making a positive impact on the world. At Impact Hub, we remain committed to supporting entrepreneurs who are ready to embrace sustainability as a core element of their journey. Together, we can build a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future. Are you ready to join the movement? Let’s take action today for a better tomorrow.
