When capital meets community: Opening financing pathways across Central America

Through YES Fund, Impact Hub Managua brings together growth financing, business support and regional connections to help entrepreneurs prepare for their next step. With US$530,000 in cumulative financing across 19 operations involving 15 businesses in Nicaragua, its experience raises a central question about building more inclusive economies: what does it take for more entrepreneurs to have the opportunity to grow?

Having customers and a promising product does not always mean a business can secure the financing it needs. An entrepreneur may see an opportunity to invest in equipment, fulfil larger orders, or strengthen operations, yet struggle to meet the requirements needed to make that investment possible. Reliable financial records, cash-flow projections, and connections to financial institutions can separate a business’s potential from its next step. For Impact Hub Managua, this gap was visible within its own entrepreneurial community. It raised a practical challenge: how could more businesses access capital and develop the preparation needed to use it effectively?

The response was YES Fund, the Young Entrepreneur Sustainable Fund. Designed for small and growing businesses, with a particular focus on young entrepreneurs, women-led enterprises, and companies that create opportunities for others, the initiative combines financing with business support and investment readiness. Its approach recognises that expanding access to economic opportunity requires attention to the conditions that determine who can secure finance in the first place.

In Nicaragua, YES Fund connects financial analysis and responsible credit processes with Impact Hub Managua’s expertise, entrepreneurial community and financial-sector partners. The work begins before a funding decision. Teams help businesses clarify their financial needs, prepare the required information, assess cash-flow projections and develop clearer business cases. Where relevant, mentoring, training and market connections provide additional support.

This preparation matters because businesses arrive with different needs. Some require stronger financial records or more realistic projections. Others need additional time before borrowing, or capital that better reflects the rhythm of their revenue. Understanding those differences helps establish whether financing is appropriate and what support an enterprise needs to move forward. Responsible assessment is therefore central to the approach. Making finance more inclusive also means helping entrepreneurs understand the commitments involved, with credit review and portfolio monitoring supporting informed decisions for both businesses and capital providers.

As of 30 September 2026, YES Fund’s Nicaragua portfolio recorded US$530,000 in cumulative financing through 19 operations involving 15 businesses. These figures represent the Nicaragua portfolio alone. They show the scale of financing delivered there, along with the preparation, analysis, and ongoing support that form part of the model. What began as a response to a financing gap in Nicaragua has developed into a regional initiative. YES Fund now operates in Nicaragua, Panama, Costa Rica and Honduras, with expansion planned for Guatemala, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic. Across these markets, it aims to connect promising enterprises with financing suited to their needs and the preparation to use capital productively.

That regional ambition depends on local understanding. The barriers one business faces may differ from another’s, shaped by its circumstances and the financial environment in which it operates. Relationships and on-the-ground knowledge help make those differences visible and inform the support provided. Impact Hub Managua also builds those relationships through Regional Investment Connect (RIC), an initiative it created in 2019. Bringing together entrepreneurs, business leaders, financial institutions, investors and ecosystem partners from Central America and the Caribbean, RIC creates opportunities for people who can support business growth to meet.

For YES Fund, it offers a setting to discover growing companies, understand financing gaps and introduce financial-readiness support. It also opens conversations with institutions that could become future financing partners. An introduction does not automatically lead to a loan; businesses still go through eligibility, analysis and approval processes. But it can establish a relationship through which an entrepreneur begins to explore available options.

Together, RIC and YES Fund connect Impact Hub Managua’s role as a convenor with its practical support for enterprises. The next phase includes strengthening follow-up between the two initiatives, gathering clearer evidence of outcomes, deepening YES Fund’s work in its four operating countries, and preparing for expansion. Alongside this work, YES Ventures, the Young Entrepreneur Sustainable Ventures initiative, offers a separate impact venture-capital approach for founders pursuing solutions aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals across Latin America. Its model includes investor connections, mentoring, market access and impact measurement. While YES Fund addresses growth-finance barriers for operating businesses, YES Ventures focuses on founders whose needs and growth paths call for venture investment.

The wider significance of this work lies in the question of who can participate in economic opportunity. For a business facing barriers to finance, access depends on more than the availability of money. It can also depend on the information it can present, the relationships it can reach and the support available as it prepares for investment. YES Fund offers a practical example of how an Impact Hub can work together on those conditions. Building more inclusive economies requires sustained attention to the barriers that keep opportunity out of reach, and locally rooted approaches that help more entrepreneurs navigate them. Through YES Fund, Impact Hub Managua brings financing, preparation and relationships together to help businesses take their next step.

Impact Hub Managua welcomes dialogue with investors, banks, ecosystem builders and fellow Impact Hubs interested in bringing more growth capital within reach of entrepreneurs across the region.
