Regional Investment Consultant | Deep Dive Africa Program

Application deadline

24 September 2021

Duration

5 months (possible extension), Full-time (1FTE).

Location

Remote (preferably based in Accra, Nigeria, Kenya or Rwanda).

Position Summary

Impact Hub is looking to fill a key role to help unlock investment opportunities for early-stage startups in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and Rwanda as part of the Deep Dive Africa 2021 program.

Context

Across today’s Africa, many developing context problems remain (deep poverty, infrastructure challenges etc.), but equally remarkable, is the rise of a new generation of entrepreneurs creating opportunities and tackling some of the biggest challenges of our time. Entrepreneurship is increasingly becoming a cornerstone of this emerging inclusive growth journey and a driver of economic and societal progress.

That said, the startup ecosystems in cities like Accra, Lagos, Kigali and Nairobi have developed to a point where there’s an increasing need for early-stage investment capital. Companies have proven product-market fit but are not able to raise either a pre-seed or seed rounds of funding to pursue growth. On the other hand, venture capital investors from outside of Africa are looking for new deals and are perceiving the continent as an emerging and potentially interesting market to invest in. However, they do not have the local networks to access, evaluate and manage deal flow. Given the complexities of navigating African opportunities, there is a need to create a soft landing “platform” for these investors in a way that lessens their risk when entering into markets like Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, Kenya and other African countries.

In a quest to test the viability of this approach, in late 2019, Impact Hub Accra (IHA) with funding and support from GIZ Make-IT in Africa, launched a pilot project; Deep Dive Africa (DDA). The purpose of DDA was to explore the potential impact of a carefully curated investor-startup engagement with the main focus of driving investor interest from Europe and preparing startups to receive capital. In the end, engineering a higher and accelerated amount of early-stage investment deal flow between the outside investors and African entrepreneurs. In the six months after DDA 2019, the initiative had helped to raise 500.000€ for startups in Nigeria and Ghana.

Following a well-executed pilot in 2019, Impact Hub is implementing DDA in 2021 with a more expansive set of activities over a longer timeline to achieve an even bigger impact. Furthermore, the project responds to the specific needs and opportunities arising from the COVID-19 situation in which we currently are.

We are looking for a consultant to help unlock investment opportunities for early-stage startups in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and Rwanda.

Are you the right person to lead this?
